Nautical Topsy Turvy Wedding Cake

I always say that not all wedding cakes have to be “traditional”. Sometimes is nice to add a bit of whimsy to your special day, and this can certainly be done with having a fun wedding cake.

This 4 tier topsy turvy wedding cake had a nautical theme. It was done in a playful yet tasteful design in the bold navy, white and gold colours of the wedding. The topper is a large anchor featuring the couples initials and has a rope detail that goes all the way down the cake, which ties the whole design together.

Have fun with your wedding cake and it will be the magical centrepiece of your special day!

Diane Von Furstenberg Inspired Cake

When watching the DVF Fall/Winter 2011 fashion show, I fell in love with a gold, red & black diagonally striped dress. Mainly because they are my favourite colours, but also because the dress is so chic and timeless, and of course because this pattern would look great on a cake!

I took this inspired moment and made a simple 3 tiered cake that had the same colours & stripes as the DVF dress. I switched up the direction the lines were going on each tier and added a red rose to finish off the design.

Simple, elegant, and timeless. I love it!!!

Hugs + Stitches 1st Birthday Cake!

Cake has always been an important part of birthdays, so a first birthday cake is definitely something that is very memorable. When Tanya and Eugene first decided on a theme for their daughter Alyssa’s first birthday it had to be fun, sweet & cute, just like Alyssa! They chose a “Hugs + Stitches” theme, which was all of those and more.

The cake was my famous topsy turvy style, and incorporated the elements of the Hugs + Stitches theme: a number one, butterflies, and flowers that all had a stitched look. Fun colours and a playful theme certainly make Alyssa’s first birthday cake a very memorable one. And of course, she had her very own mini version of the cake that she could smash up, and she had lots of fun doing it!

Happy First Birthday Alyssa!

~Josie

Here she is with her cake…almost as big as she is!

Time to smash her little version…

Food Network Challenge: Awesome 80′s Cakes WINNERS!

The Food Network Challenge that my friend Fabrizio and I competed in has finally aired in the U.S., so I wanted to write a little something about our experience.

Our challenge was to create a totally awesome cake that incorporated the spirit of the 1980′s – from the crazy neon fashion, to the decades most memorable fads. The winning design was going to be presented at an 80′s themed party, so it had to be fun!

My competitors were three amazingly talented cake artists: Heidi Cottrill, Mark Lie and BethAnn Goldberg. The judges were Keegan Gerhard, Kerry Vincent, and 80′s pop sensation Tiffany.

The challenge was so much fun! It went by so quickly, and with minimal mishaps in our kitchen. Fab and I were very prepared, and tried to be as entertaining as possible! There was drama, funny moments, and even a little friendly trash talking amongst the competitors, but we all had fun with it!

This was the best thing I’ve ever done in my professional career as a cake designer. From the amazing people I met, to the rush of adrenaline I felt when it all took place, and the highs and lows from all that happened…yes, is was all TOTALLY AWESOME!

We all had great cake designs that captured the spirit of that crazy decade. Mine was the winning cake and I took home the gold metal and $10,000! A special thanks goes out to my friend Fab for helping me so much with everything, I couldn’t have done this without him. Thanks Fab!!!

Here is our winning cake. From the bottom it had an 80′s style neon ruffle skirt, acid wash jeans with plastic sunglasses, a blue graffiti wall that included all kinds of 80′s slang words, a boom box & gold chain, and to top it off an arcade game that I called “Eat My Cupcake”…

Here are my competitors cakes (BethAnn’s, Heidi’s and Mark’s):

I hope it airs here in Canada soon so everyone else can watch it! I will keep you posted.

Cupcake Centrepieces

I am asked to do all sorts of fun things with cakes, cupcakes, candy, cookies, etc., and I love the way dessert could be incorporated into something you wouldn’t normally think dessert whould be. Such is the case for Vanessa’s confirmation party. I was asked to make a lilac coloured cake with delicate hydrangea flowers on it, and make matching centrepieces made out of hydrangea cupcakes! What a wonderful way to incorporate dessert into something classically known for being made with real flowers!

Hydrangeas in various shades of purple, fluffy white toile, and delicate white feathers adorned these cupcake bouquets. These would certainly make any party that much more decadent & fun! These centrepieces certainly added a touch of Spring elegance to Vanessa’s confirmation celebration.
