The Food Network Challenge that my friend Fabrizio and I competed in has finally aired in the U.S., so I wanted to write a little something about our experience.
Our challenge was to create a totally awesome cake that incorporated the spirit of the 1980′s – from the crazy neon fashion, to the decades most memorable fads. The winning design was going to be presented at an 80′s themed party, so it had to be fun!
My competitors were three amazingly talented cake artists: Heidi Cottrill, Mark Lie and BethAnn Goldberg. The judges were Keegan Gerhard, Kerry Vincent, and 80′s pop sensation Tiffany.
The challenge was so much fun! It went by so quickly, and with minimal mishaps in our kitchen. Fab and I were very prepared, and tried to be as entertaining as possible! There was drama, funny moments, and even a little friendly trash talking amongst the competitors, but we all had fun with it!
This was the best thing I’ve ever done in my professional career as a cake designer. From the amazing people I met, to the rush of adrenaline I felt when it all took place, and the highs and lows from all that happened…yes, is was all TOTALLY AWESOME!

We all had great cake designs that captured the spirit of that crazy decade. Mine was the winning cake and I took home the gold metal and $10,000! A special thanks goes out to my friend Fab for helping me so much with everything, I couldn’t have done this without him. Thanks Fab!!!
Here is our winning cake. From the bottom it had an 80′s style neon ruffle skirt, acid wash jeans with plastic sunglasses, a blue graffiti wall that included all kinds of 80′s slang words, a boom box & gold chain, and to top it off an arcade game that I called “Eat My Cupcake”…

Here are my competitors cakes (BethAnn’s, Heidi’s and Mark’s):

I hope it airs here in Canada soon so everyone else can watch it! I will keep you posted.
